Here in Canada, finding a Chayote is not that difficult because they are now commonly sold in most known grocery stores like No Frills, Price Choppers and FreshCo. Recipe variations: substitute pork with ground beef, or sliced chicken. For additional color and flavor, saute red bell pepper along with the chayote.

The ingredients needed to make Chayote Guisado:
  1. Get 1 medium chayote, chopped
  2. Take 1/4 ground meat
  3. Take 1 medium red tomato, chopped
  4. Get 1 medium red onion, chopped
  5. Make ready 3 clove garlic, crushed
  6. Prepare 1 salt to taste
  7. Take 1 dash of black ground pepper
  8. Get 1 cup of water
  9. Get 2 tbsp canola oil
  10. Prepare 1 cube Knorr chicken or pork (optional)

Heat oil in medium in a deep pan. Add the ground meat and cook until it changes its color. Crumble the meat with a fork to prevent clumping as you brown it. Season with a little salt and pepper.

Steps to make Chayote Guisado:
  1. In a small pot and under medium heat, pour canola oil and fry garlic, onions tomatoes and ground meat. Season with salt and pepper. Simmer or until meat is cooked.
  2. Pour in the cup of water and let it simmer. Add the Knorr cube. Adjust seasoning or add a little water to your taste.
  3. Pour the chopped chayote and continue to simmer. Do not cover pot or over cook chayote.
  4. Serve while hot with rice or toasted french bread of any kinds.

Crumble the meat with a fork to prevent clumping as you brown it. Season with a little salt and pepper. Sayote Guisado with Chicken and Shrimp is another way of making ginisang sayote. This variation is cooked with chicken slices and shrimp and I intentionally added more broth so that it can be more enjoyable when eaten with rice. Ginisang Sayote or Sautéed Chayote is a simple recipe involving one of the members of the gourd family, chayote.
