Use Food to Elevate Your Mood

Many of us believe that comfort foods are bad for us and that we need to avoid them. If your comfort food is candy or junk food this holds true. Otherwise, comfort foods can be really nutritious and good for you. There are a number of foods that, when you consume them, could better your mood. If you feel a little bit down and you need an emotional pick me up, try a number of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be actually wonderful at dealing with depression. You should make sure, however, that what you make includes the egg yolk. Whenever you want to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most vital part of the egg. Eggs, the yolks in particular, are loaded with B vitamins. These B vitamins are great for helping to boost your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–run better. Try consuming some eggs to feel better!

Make a few trail mix of nuts or seeds. Your mood can be improved by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera. This is because these nuts are rich in magnesium, which helps to raise serotonin production. Serotonin is called the “feel good” chemical and it tells your brain how you should be feeling at all times. The more you have of it, the better you will feel. Not only that, nuts, specifically, are a great source of protein.

Cold water fish are excellent if you want to feel better. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, etc, they’re all chock-full of omega-3 and DHA. These are two substances that increase the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s the truth: eating tuna fish sandwiches can actually help you overcome your depression.

It’s not hard to fight your bad mood when you are eating grains. Millet, quinoa, barley, etc are fantastic at helping you feel happier. They help you feel full as well which can actually help to make your mood better. Feeling hungry can be a real downer! These grains can help your mood elevate since it’s not at all difficult for your body to digest them. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps bring up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, improves your mood.

Green tea is wonderful for moods. You knew green tea had to be included in this article, right? Green tea has been found to be rich in an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have discovered that this amino acid basically stimulates brain waves. This helps raise your mental focus while calming the rest of your body. You already knew green tea could help you feel healthier. Now you know that green tea can elevate your mood as well!

Now you realize that junk food isn’t necessarily what you have to eat when you are wanting to help your moods get better. Try a couple of of these hints instead.
