How to Improve Your Mood with Food

In general, people have been taught to believe that “comfort” foods are bad for the body and need to be avoided. Sometimes, if your comfort food is basically candy or other junk foods, this is true. At times, comfort foods can be perfectly nourishing and good for us to eat. There are some foods that, when you eat them, may boost your mood. When you feel a little down and need an emotional pick-me-up, test out a few of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be actually wonderful at beating back depression. You should be sure, however, that what you make includes the yolk. The egg yolk is the most essential part of the egg iwhen it comes to helping you cheer up. Eggs, specifically the yolks, are loaded with B vitamins. B vitamins can genuinely help you elevate your mood. This is because the B vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that tell you how to feel). Consume an egg and feel better!

Make a trail mixout of different seeds and nuts. Your mood can be raised by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera. This is because these nuts are rich in magnesium, which helps to increase your production of serotonin. Serotonin is the “feel good” natural substance that dictates to your brain how you feel all the time. The more of this chemical in your brain, the better you’ll feel. Nuts, on top of improving your mood, can be a super source of protein.

Cold water fish are wonderful for eating if you are wanting to fight depression. Cold water fish including tuna, trout and wild salmon are chock full of DHA and omega-3 fatty acids. These are two substances that boost the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can seriously raise your mood.

Some grains are actually great for repelling bad moods. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are excellent at helping you feel happier. They help you feel full as well which can really help to improve your mood. It’s not difficult to feel depressed when you feel famished! The reason these grains help your mood so much is that they are not difficult to digest. You digest these grains more quickly than other foods which can help promote your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel more pleasant, mood wise.

Your mood can actually be helped by green tea. You just knew green tea had to be included in this article, right? Green tea is loaded with a certain amino acid called L-theanine. Research has proved that this amino acid promotes the production of brain waves. This will improve your brain’s concentration while also loosening up the rest of your body. You knew that green tea helps you become better. Now you are aware that it can help improve your mood too!

Now you know that junk food isn’t necessarily what you need to eat when you wish to help your moods get better. Try some of these instead!
