Foods That Make You Happy
In general, people have been trained to think that “comfort” foods are bad for the body and need to be avoided. Often, if the comfort food is a sugary food or another junk food, this is true. Otherwise, comfort foods can be very nourishing and good for you. There are several foods that, when you consume them, may improve your mood. If you feel a little bit down and in need of an emotional pick me up, try several of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly great at dealing with depression. Just see to it that you don’t toss out the yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, the egg yolk in particular, are stuffed full of B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be terrific for lifting up your mood. This is because they improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that tell you how to feel). Try consuming a couple of eggs to jolly up!
Make some trail mix of nuts or seeds. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc are all wonderful for raising your mood. This is possible since these foods are high in magnesium which boosts serotonin production. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical substance that tells the brain how to feel at any given time. The higher your serotonin levels, the happier you will feel. Not just that but nuts, specifically, are a fantastic source of protein.
Cold water fish are great for eating if you wish to beat back depression. Cold water fish such as tuna, trout and wild salmon are chock full of DHA and omega-3 fatty acids. These are two things that actually help the grey matter in your brain work a lot better. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can seriously raise your mood.
Grains can be great for driving away a terrible mood. Millet, quinoa, barley, etc are excellent at helping you be happier. They can help you feel full for longer also, which can help your mood too. Feeling hungry can truly make you feel terrible! The reason these grains elevate your mood is that they are not difficult for your body to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps promote a rise in your blood sugar which in turn brings up your mood to a happier place.
Green tea is really good for your mood. You were sure green tea had to be in this article somewhere, right? Green tea is high in a particular amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid essentially induces brain waves. This helps raise your mental acuity while calming the rest of your body. You knew that green tea helps you be a lot healthier.
